Refrigerant goes through cycles of compression and expansion where it basically absorbs heat within the freezer area and releases it to the outside air. When the cycle is complete, the warmed refrigerant is allowed to gently melt the cubes of ice just enough to release them from the ice-making tray. They are then sent to the holding bin and the process starts over. All you need is the portable ice maker, some water, and an electrical outlet, although some may also run on batteries to make them even more portable.
A portable ice maker keeps on going until it runs out of water, and many of them can produce somewhere in the range of 20 to 40 pounds of ice per day. It just depends on the size of the unit. Each tray of ice cubes can be frozen in 6 to 15 minutes. If you simply need one glass of ice, you can see that it won’t take very long for your wish to be satisfied. If you are having a party where people will be dropping by throughout the evening, you will be happy to have your portable ice maker churning away and making new ice cubes every few minutes.
