Troubleshooting an Ice Cube Maker

Although the function of an ice cube maker is fairly simple, there are still a number of issues that can occur that may cause them not to work to their best potential. Some issues you may see with a poorly functioning ice cube maker are the inability to produce ice, the production of ice with a poor taste or smell, and the production of too much ice. In many cases, you can fix these problems yourself without throwing money at a professional handyman.
When you begin to troubleshoot an ice cube maker, the first thing you must do is empty all of the ice out of the tray. Wash the bin out with warm soapy water if you have ice that has a foul smell or taste to it. If the bad smell persists, check the food items that you have stores around the ice cube maker bin and see if anything may be leaking or getting too old. Ice tends to take on the smell and taste of the poorly wrapped food around it.
Check to make sure that all of the hoses in your ice cube maker are connected properly if you find a puddle on the floor, or if ice is not being produced quickly. Tighten the nut around the connection to make sure it is secure and free from leakage. Your ice cube maker is only as good as the water supply coming into it. You may also want to check the water pressure to ensure that the adequate amount of water gets in the ice cube maker in a timely manner.
Move the shutoff arm up if you find that the ice cube maker is producing too much ice and overflowing the bin. After you move the lever into the off position, you must manually move it back to the on position if you want the ice maker to continue making ice. Try adjusting the freezer temperature to no higher than 5 degrees Fahrenheit, as this will make sure the ice cube maker is kept at a temperature well below freezing. Keeping the temperature down low will ensure that your ice cube maker is not being overworked due to the temperature being too high.
Another thing to try when troubleshooting an ice cube maker is to remove all of the excess built up of ice around the machine and the dispenser. This can be a reason that an adequate amount of ice is not coming out of the dispenser.
Unplug the freezer in preparation of flushing out the supply lines, if none of the options listed above fix your problems. Remove and wash the lines with warm soapy water then attach them back to the ice maker. Let a few cycles of ice go through, and see if your ice cube problems are solved. If, after all of this, you can’t figure out what the problem is, you may need to call a professional in to help you find the source of your ice maker problems.
